Specialized S-Works Evade Helmet Is About More Than Protecting Your Head

S-Works Evade: Wind Tunnel Tested, Ultra-Light Construction. The Ultimate Aerodynamic racing Helmet.

Typically, says Specialized, riders are forced to choose between well ventilated helmets and those that are aerodynamically efficient. Time trial helmets are fast but have limited application because of their size, weight, and lack of ventilation. Road helmets, on the other hand, are extremely lightweight and well ventilated but not terribly aerodynamic. Specialized has collected the brightest minds and used some of the most advanced research and development tools to help riders bridge the gap and stop compromising.

It's a simple rule: the more aerodynamic you are, the faster you can go. The S-Works Evade helmet helps you find those extra seconds that can help you win the race! Specialized wanted to incorporate the benefits of a TT helmet with the benefits of a traditional road helmet into a package that makes sense. Rather than adapt a TT helmet for the road, they decided to start from scratch to make something that is the best of both worlds. The Evade helmet is super lightweight; so it's comfortable, and is just as efficient at air cooling and ventilation as their road helmets.

Specialized included a list of the features and technologies of the Evade helmet:

•Advanced aerodynamics saves 46 seconds over 40km*
•Patented Kevlar-reinforced Inner Matrix for ultra-light construction and energy management
•4th Dimension Cooling System with deep internal channels, massive vents and aligned exhaust ports
•Ultra-light, Mindset micro-dial fit system with height adjustability for perfect fit and comfort
•Tri-Fix web splitter for improved comfort and ease of strap adjustments
•Thin, soft and lightweight 4X DryLite webbing won’t stretch out with sweat or water
•Instrap webbing system for ultra-light construction and security
•Complies with one or more of the following safety standards for bicycle helmets: CPSC, SNELL B90A, CE and AS/NZS

Come by today and check out the S-Works Evade Helmet!

2014 Trek Crockett: Aluminum Race Bike & World Cup Champion under KFC

Trek Introduces Crockett, the CX Race Rocket

Crocket_Media_Kit_FS_Blue_2048x1500

Crockett is for racing. Developed with direct input from Katie Freakin Compton, the Crockett is all about earning your cowbells and handups all while crossing the line first. Already raced to an overall
World Cup Championship under KFC, the Crockett will be offered in aluminum only along side of the carbon Cronus CX which returns for 2014 in two models.

Available now, the Crockett might just show up on some cross courses near you this Fall.

Crocket_Media_Kit_Profile_2048x1500

Since the Crockett is race bred, there is still the disc or canti debate to contend with – though Crockett will be available in both so you can take your pick. The frames do appear to be one or the other
though, so you won’t be able to change your mind down the road.

Each frame is constructed from Trek’s 200 series Alpha Aluminum which is their premium alloy, heavily shaped into the smooth lines of the Crockett. The geometry was chosen based on Katie’s input for race specific handling.

Crocket_Media_Kit_ChainKeep_2048x1500 Crocket_Media_Kit_Rear_Disk_2048x1500

The frame features a built in 3S chainkeeper to prevent derailments in the worst conditions, and post mount disc brakes on both front and rear for the non canti frame. The frame also includes improved internal cable routing to keep things operating smoother, longer in cross conditions.

Crocket_Media_Kit_Angle_2048x1500

At the front of the bike is Trek’s IsoSpeed full carbon fork borrowed from the Domane and tuned for CX, smoothing the ride while still remaining laterally stiff.

Complete bikes will be offered in the Crockett 9 Canti shown above, the Crockett 7 Canti and Disc, and the Crockett 5 Canti and Disc, as well as framesets for both Canti and Disc models.

2014 Specialized Epic Gets Tweaks to Boost Performance

2014 Specialized Epic: Fast, Firm, Aggressive 29er Geometry and Exceptional Components

The big change is a frame that's laterally stiffer and about .5 lbs lighter. The new carbon frame has lighter, more optimized materials yet thick chain stays to provide lateral stiffness. The seat post is now 27.2mm in diameter to save weight and make room for the brain shock cable that is fed in between the seat tube and the moving seat stays.

The cable routing is now internal. This is a big diversion for Specialized as they've stayed the course with their neatly organized external cable routing. Their old system tucked the cables under the down tube in a very organized manner and it worked well when set up properly. Specialized has designed a big port hole for the now internally routed cables and seals them off with big caps that guide the cable out of the frame. Inside, they house the cables in a foam 'noodle' material that prevents any kind of rattling noise inside the frame.

The latest Brain Shock still strives to lock out during pedaling and activate during trail bumps, but it is now smoother than ever during this transition.

The Epic World Cup is exclusively available with 1x drivetrains. In the case of the top shelf S-Works version, that means SRAM's XX1 group. The shifts are smooth and crisp, it is practically silent, and the unique 10-42T cassette provides more than enough range for the intended purpose.

Specialized pairs that awesome drivetrain with Magura MT8 hydraulic disc brakes, complete with their trick molded carbon composite brake lever bodies and calipers. The lightweight, 22mm-wide carbon fiber rims are quick to accelerate and reasonably stiff under hard cornering, lending a secure feel even when aggressively attacking smaller berms - helped further by the new 15-mm front thru-axle.

Specialized has used the Epic to roll out its new SWAT line of product, which will have benefits for both mountain and road cyclist. The acronym stands for "Storage, Water, Air, Tools," and refers to several on-bike storage options.

On the carbon frames, there's a sleeve that holds a specially shaped multi tool. On aluminum frames, the tool fits into a holder under the downtube-mounted bottle cage. There's also an 11-speed compatible chain tool, and storage for a spare link, which hides under the headset's pre-load cap.

SWAT also includes a removable flat repair pod that sits below the water bottle on the downtube. The small plastic box has enough room for a spare tube, tire lever, C02 inflator, and a cartridge. The whole thing bolts to a Specialized Zee water bottle cage and is secured by a third riv-nut on the down tube.

All new Epic models are compatible with the SWAT system, but only the highest end bikes come with the kit stock.

For 2014 Specialized has updated the bike's suspension by slightly reducing the leverage ratio, flattening the shock rate a bit, and revising the dampers shim stack. These changes make the locked-to-open transition smoother, the end of a stroke a bit more progressive, and the ride a bit more sensitive when open.

Beyond the suspension tune, Specialized made the shock's reservoir about 25 percent smaller to save weight. They have also revised the hose (it is more durable) and reduced the number of settings in the BRAIN threshold adjuster to five, to make it easier to balance the front to rear feel of the suspension.

There is so much more to be said about the 2014 Specialized Epic, and many more reviews to come. Why don't you come by The Spoke Shop and check out the great Specialized 2014 model year bikes!

2014 Specialized CruX and Roubaix Range Bikes (Disc Brakes)

The 2014 Specialized Robaix SL4 Expert Disc comes equipped with Shimano's new hydraulic road disc brake and Ultegra Di2 electronic shifting.

They introduced these disc equipped Roubaix models last year, and the frame has now been designed around the disc brakes. The rear caliper is mounted inside the dropout and the hose, along with the gear cables, is routed inside the frame. The new fork has the hose mounted externally, and the rotors are mounted to the DT Axis 4.0 wheelset.

BB30 continues to be Specialized preferred bottom bracket standard, so FSA chainsets abound across the 2014 range. In this case, the Expert Disc comes with a carbon armed FSA SL-K light chainset.

Of course, the S-Works version of the frame comes with the amazing Shimano Dura Ace Di2 9070 electronic groupset, rolls on Roval CLX 40 hoops, and is powered by a FACT carbon chainset.

The Roubaix Sport is offered with a double or triple chainset, both FSA Gossamer, and both with Shimano 105 dual control levers and mechs and Specialized Axis 2.0 wheels.

At the Comp level, you will find the spec similar to the Elite, but with Ultegra dual control levers and mechs. The reintroduced Pro represents a more significant leap, with Dura Ace shifting, a FACT carbon chainset, and Roval Fusee aluminum clinchers.

Next is the 2014 CruX

Specifically the Sport E5 disc — is built around an aluminum frame and carbon fork will be slowed this year by SRAM S-Series hydraulic brakes. The mechs are SRAm Apex, the chainset SRAM S-Series, and the wehels, Specialized's own CHECK Axis 2.0 Disc.

The Sport Carbon (pictured) comes with a FACT carbon chassis with cantilever brakes. Shimano 105 STI levers and mechs take care of the shifting. An FSA Gossamer chainset with cyclocross specific 46 and 36 tooth rings, and proprietary Axis 2.0 wheels.

The low end model - Crux E5 is built around the same aluminum chassis, but is fitted with Shimano Sora mechs and shifters and Tektro cantilever brakes.

Three frameset options will be offered, each in striking paint schemes. The Pro Carbon fameset will be available with disc mounts or cantilver bosses.

[VIDEO] 2014 Specialized Epic at Specialized Product Launch

www.spokeshop.com

We've got a sneak peek of the 2014 Specialized Epic at the Specialized Dealer event in Copper Mountain, Colorado.

The project manager for the 2014 Specialized Epic was nice enough to show us some of the features and explain what makes the new bike so great.

The goal, he said, was to take what they knew already worked, and then tweak some small details to make the bike perform at an elevated level.

The stiffness of the rear end was bolstered by a pivot joining the shock, the link and the stay all in one pivot - and this also helps the weight in this area. They have also used ShockBlock technology, allowing the bike to be more supple on small bumps by dissolving road shock into a cartridge bearing.

Faster, Smoother, More Confident Riding

Jay-Hoots-descends-slick-rock.jpg

Help your MTB Riding With These Simple Tips (bicycling.com)

Do you want to go faster, ride smoother, and have more confidence in any situation? These four skills will help take your riding to the next level!

Photo: To ride steep, snot-slick rocks, Hoots suggests mapping out your line. (Margus Riga)

(Posted by Brian Fiske) You may not know Jay Hoots, but you’re likely familiar with his work. The 44-year-old fromVancouver, British Columbia, has designed cycling gear, earned a reputation as a first-ratecoach and instructor, and has built more that 40 bike parks and pump tracks. That mix of experience has given Hoots a unique perspective on what it takes to take your riding to the next level. Whether you’re a beginner or veteran mountain biking, these four steps will make faster, smoother and more confident in any situation.

Pressure control
Hoots advises his students to learn to move both the bike and your body around for more traction and control. A pump track is a great place to work on this skill, but you can also use something closer to home: a curb. “Riding up, you want to go from the point of getting the front wheel on and then riding your rear wheel up to getting up and over using pressure control,” Hoots says. “The object is to get up on the curb touching each tire, but not hitting the curb as a square edge.” To practice this, think about more than just hopping up with your feet—it’s weighting and unweighting first the front and then the rear of the bike to get it up and on the curb. “Once you’re up, practice pumping down the same way,” Hoots says. “You want to make it a smooth edge, not a square edge.”

Pushing into corners
To turn, most beginners—and even some intermediate riders—just turn their handlebar to corner. Advanced cornering is more active—it’s about pressing the bike into a corner. “You want to look ahead and commit,” Hoots says, “and then, with your pedals level, press through the apex of the corner with your arms and legs. This happens when you start to trust your tires and trust the bike.” The other key component: Speed, since leaning the bike over is a must. You can practice this on any corner.

Amplified braking
“A lot of people will tell you that you need to get your ass back when you’re braking, but you never know how far,” Hoots says. “There are a lot of things at play, but if you keep your cranks level but drop your heels, that will usually put you in the right position. It amplifies how much pressure you’re getting from the rear wheel to the ground.” Hoots recommends adding this braking practice to your curb sessions. “Every time you bump off a curb, you’re figuring out where your body is and how to move front and back,” he explains. “I’ve lost track of how much time I’ve spent bumping into curbs.”

Planning
Part of planning is looking ahead, which also gets your shoulders and upper body in the right place. But the bigger part is mentally walking through what you’re doing before you do it. “When consistency counts, you need to plan,” Hoots says. “Think about Ryan Leech hopping up and riding on a chain between two posts. He doesn’t jump up there and go, ‘Oh my god I’m riding this! It’s wicked!’ He’s thought through that move as well as what he’s doing after it, and after that, too,” Hoots says. To plan ahead, you need to break down the moves. Think through the steps of getting up and down a curb. Or map out the points you want to hit in a corner. Then plan through all the corners of your local big switchback climb. “Once you have the sequence down, then you can replicate it,” Hoots says. “Because doing something once is great, but being able to do it the same way twice is really a trick.”

A resident of Vancouver, Hoots honed his skills in British Columbia’s Coast Mountains. (Dustan Sept)

[VIDEO] BREAKING NEWS: 2014 Madone 7 Series Released!

2013 Madone Pictured Courtesy of PelotonMagazine.com

The 2013 Tour de France Needed Something Special - Like A 2014 Trek Madone 7 Series — Custom Made

The new frameset has dropped in weight by 25 grams compared to the 2012 Madone 7-Series. Trek says they accomplished this by reworking the composites and layup used for construction, and that the new rear chainstay design has improved both ride quality and stopping performance from the direct-mount integrated brake units.

The bike reviewing site bikeradar.com has used Trek's Project One website to create designs similar to that of Fabian Cancellara... the "Spartacus" Frame: custom paint, carbon Bontrager wheels, Dura-Ace and a full smattering of Bontrager lightweight carbon parts.

Roadbikeaction.com had this to say about bulding bikes using Trek's Project One, "[The] experience can be as quick as five minutes. But with options ranging from the thousands of paint job configurations, component choices from Campagnolo, Shimano, and Sram, SRM and Quarq power meter add-ons, Bontrager wheel depth and material choices, in addition to your taste in cable housing, handlebar tape, and shifter hoods, Project One can be a lengthy, but fun, endeavor.

Probikeswap.com on the other hand, has released pictures of what the Radioshack Leapord Trek riders will be riding.

So what's new on the 2014 Madone 7 series?

We've already mentioned a weight drop of 25g. The chain stays also have been stiffened near the brake for much better braking performance, and the geometry has been tweaked a bit to improve the ride feel. They did this by adding a bit of vertical flex near the end of the stays to improve comfort but still keeping great braking performance.

You can design yourself a 2014 Madone 7 on Trek's Project 1 custom program - and keep checking our blog for more on the full 2014 Lineup coming soon!

World's Best 20 Bicycling CIties - Might be Eurocentric

Amsterdam has a long tradition of cycling for basic transportation

No US City Makes the Top 20 - Billings Should Be Working Towards Being on that List

Polling is a difficult art.  You can generally get about any answer you set out to get by how you design the poll.  So, a new poll produced by Copenhagenize Design Co. adds useful information to the question of cycling friendly places throughout the world, but there is at least a chance that their criteria may have been at least somewhat responsible for 3 of the top 20 being in Holland.  Moreover, almost all of the 20 were in Europe, with the lone North American entry being Montreal.

The study took a look at 150 cities in all, and at least my research online did not come up with any rankings or scores beyond the top 20.  It may be that well known cycling Meccas in the US such as Portland and Davis may have come in 21 and 22.  Possibly the folks at Copenhagenize Design Co. will provide more data later.

Their criteria for selection included:

  • advocacy
  • bicycle culture
  • cycling facilities
  • infrastructure
  • bike share program
  • gender split
  • modal share
  • modal
    share increase since 2006
  • perception of safety
  • politics
  • social
    acceptance
  • urban planning
  • traffic calming
Business insider did a nice analysis of the list with some great picture of some of the cities.  And then did another piece on why Americans don't get it.  Why we don't have a single city that made the list.
The article quotes Mikael Colville-Andersen, CEO of Copenhagenize, the consulting and communications company that published the Index.

Even if more Americans wanted to cycle to work, the infrastructure
isn't there for them. In the U.S., planners and engineers are
"incredibly stuck in the last century paradigm of 'cars are the only
transport form that we plan for,'" Colville-Andersen said. "We've forgotten that the bicycle used to be a form of transportation."
Many U.S. cities are working to improve cycling infrastructure, but
don't always do so intelligently. Bike lanes are often placed to the
left of parked cars, putting cyclists between moving traffic and doors
that can open at any time.
"This doesn't keep cyclists safe," Colville-Andersen said, calling the setup a "brain fart."

Colville-Anderson also believes that we in the US see cycling as being all about sport or leisure.  And suggests that we are selling the idea of improving the infrastructure based on global warming and fitness rather than on the practical advantages of cycling in convenience and cost.  Cost for both the individual and the various governments, city, county, state, and federal, is many times higher for each car/mile than bicycle/mile.

The list is interesting, indeed.  What would Billings look like if we were more inclined to cycle whenever possible.  That would seem to be a very good goal for the future of US transportation.  After all, the bicycle has long been called the most efficient transportation system ever invented.

Take the Dual Sport for example.  A nimble hybrid with suspension, extra tread, and a moderate position for people who want the freedom to ride everywhere. If you can only have one bike, you want to get a dual sport. Sure, they get you from point A to point B faster than most other bikes, but there is so much more to this line!
SO much more, that it's hard to believe that these Gary Fisher collection bikes start at such a low price, with the quality they provide. There is such attention payed to detail like: the color-matched fork and ferruels on the cables.  They ride smooth, and help you find your love for adventure. Fast on the road to get you where you need to go: work, school, or other, yet has capable suspension and offers a confident ride on trails.
Take your inner mountain biker out once in a while, with massive tire clearance on this bike you will be able to use tires as big as XDX 29"x1.8" MTB tires (without fenders). This light, strong frame is rack and fender ready, and is plenty equipped to do some weekend warrior trail riding! It's clear that hydroforming isn't just for show and the frame is stiffer and lighter for it.

Trek begins the lineup with the 8.1 DS. Alpha Gold Aluminum, using manipulated tube shapes to balance strength and weight saving. 21 Speeds and easily accomodates 700x35c tires with fenders or up to an XDX 29"1.8" MTB tires without fenders. The 8.1 and all other Dual Sport bikes also come Bontrager saddles and bars to ensure complete comfort no matter how long you ride.

The 8.2 DS receives a shock-absorbing suspension fork that allows the front wheel to travel up and down over bumps while the handlebars stay steady, for a comfortable, controlled ride.

Now we start moving into the big leagues with the 8.3. It comes with a nice upgrade to a Shimano Acera crank and rear derailleur, and is also outfitted with mechanical disc brakes. It's SR Suntour NEX MLO front fork is preload adjustable with lockout and has 63 mm of travel. You can expect this fork to deliver smooth riding and nimble handling over even the most potholed roads and bumpiest paths..

The next step is the 8.4 and which means you get an upgraded Alivio crank, Shimano Deore rear derailleur, and Bontrager Satellite Elite ergonomic grips. You jump up to 27 speeds on this model, ensuring you always have the right gear on the road.

The 8.5 is doing a great job as the second best bike in this lineup, boasting a fantastic Shimano SLX rear derailleur and Shimano hydraulic disc brakes that provide ultimate control and stopping power.

All hail the 2013 Trek 8.6 DS. It is the ultimate two-in-one bike. Trek's proprietary IsoZone frame gives suspension that is built in to the frame. Your suspension lockout is remote controlled by a lever on the handlebar, making the 8.6 one of the best of the Gary Fisher Collection.

The 2013 Specialized Venge Expert — A Pure Race Machine

The 2013 Specialized Venge Expert is aerodynamic, stiff, and performance oriented.

Inspired by Specialized's own Tarmac and Shiv, the 2013 Venge is a pure race machine. Although, Specialized says themselves that the Tarmac is more bike than aero.
It's easy to see why someone would think using this bike would be against the rules, but it's UCI-legal in all aspects. Here are some of the things that make this bike great:

  • FACT IS 11r Aero Race Design and a full monocoque carbon frame
  • Oversized Bottom Bracket and chainstay
  • Internal cable routing
  • Tapered head tube
  • Bladed carbon seat post
  • 3:1 airfoil shaping and a straight profile

On top of all that, Specialized uses Shimano Ultegra for the entire drivetrain; including both derailleurs and the brakes. The brakes and shifters are combined on the handlebars using the Shimano Total Integration System.

As depicted in the diagram, your hands don't have to move to a different location on the handlebars to ease the transition between shifting and braking during those times when it is all-important. The 10 speed Shimano 105 cassette provides a great range of gears for a variety of terrain.

Novices and experts will absolutely love this bike. In order to truly see its capabilities, you need to test ride it.

We'd love to be the shop you choose to show you this great bike. We are The Spoke Shop and we are located at 1910 Broadwater Ave. in Billings, Montana.

We know that your schedule is busy, but we promise if you take the time to visit us that it will be worth it.

2013 Trek Marlin 29er. Ready For Action at The Spoke Shop!

The 2013 Trek Marlin 29er Has Been UNLEASHED

The Marlin is a monster. It’s got a considerably larger wheel and tire combo than a traditional 26 inch mountain bike, enhancing it’s roll-over capabilities.

The 2013 Marlin comes with a Suntour front fork with a lockout, so if you need to ride more street or smoother fire roads you can go from a plush shock to no movement in the shock with just the flip of a switch. This really helps this bike to transition from being “on-road” to off-road.

The frame is solid, and Trek’s G2 geometry really makes a difference in steering response and turning radius. Having said this, it’s even a good bike if you do some XC riding.

The 2013 Marlin also comes with Sram Derailleurs which are durable, and a very positive shift, not to mention quick! The disc brakes are a nice feature on the Marlin, made by tektro and are easy to adjust.

If this is going to be your first purchase of a mountain bike or you want to impress your friends who are always inviting you to go mountian biking, this would be a great bike to show up on.

Come on over to the Spoke Shop, located on 1910 Broadwater Ave in Billings, MT.

The 2013 Trek Domane 4.0. Want a Test Ride? Come to The Spoke Shop

The 2013 Trek Domane 4.0, PACKED with

Features for the Avid Cyclist

The 2013 Trek Domane 4.0 is absolutely incredible. To start, it's fully carbon and is designed for the racers that want a bike that goes just as fast as any other bike. The Domane but is built for comfort, even over unforgiving cobblestone roads.

In order to fulfill the needs of these racers, Trek has been working around the clock for years. Their engineers have come up with a design called "isospeed." Isospeed means that the seat tube is completely isolated from the rest of the frame to make the seat mast act like extra suspension without compromising the stiffness of the frame.

The bottom bracket is stiff and wide, which aids in acceleration despite the extra backward flex allowed by the seat mast. It's always a hassle when your chain comes off of your crank, but this year Trek has introduced a "chain keeper" to keep your chain in place even when you are at the top of your cadence.

At the end of the day, this bike is as comfortable as a touring bike, yet as fast as a racing bike. There's nothing better that a good two-in-one.

The 2013 Trek Dual Sport 8.6 Has Been Called the Ultimate Hybrid Bike and It Lives Up to it's Name! Come See One at The Spoke Shop!

Trek's 2013 Dual Sport 8.6 is an outstanding bike. It's a great bike to ride around the city or take on the daily commute, as well as allowing you to go on adventurous trails to satisfy the mountain bike rider in you. Trek's Alpha Gold aluminum is used on the 8.6 DS, which is formed into tube shapes that balance weight and strength.

The Alpha Gold frame is designed to absorb 20mm worth of roots, curbs, and railroad tracks without a shock! They call it IsoZone, and it adds comfort and durability directly into the frame. In addition, Trek utilized a handle-bar mounted control for on-the-fly suspension lockout as you switch terrain. A remote lockout means an even easier time on the trail as your hands don't have to move around as much on the handlebars.

Speaking of hands, Trek used Bontrager bars and grips that provide comfort, control, and are durable, as well as providing a nice upright ride that's easy to enjoy.

The 8.6 DS is the perfect bike for anyone who wants to ride around town as well as being able to hit some fire roads or light mountain trails on the weekends. The bike easily accommodates 700x35c tires with fenders, or you can swap those for burly Bontrager XDX 29"x1.8" MTB tires without fenders for the weekend trips to the mountains.

Trek Dual Sport bikes are the right solution for the multi-purpose rider, designed for weekday-to-weekend versatility. It's comfortable, ergonomic, and capable features are essential for the frequent rider. Having a choice for tire size is icing on the cake for those who plan to use the bike for mixed purposes. It is fast and efficient on pavement, as well as capable and confident on the dirt.

Why don't you drop by the your favorite bike shop to discover all the 2013 Trek DS 8.6 has to offer?
