Ride and handling: Confident and stable without loss of agility

Propelling the 12.1kg (26.6lb) Stumpy EVO 29 up climbs is a surprisingly sprightly affair considering the amount of travel you’re sitting on (140mm front, 135mm rear). With a decent length cockpit, things feel roomy enough without feeling overstretched.

While you’re seated, power delivery is efficient, thanks in part to the bulbous bottom bracket junction and meaty PF30 bottom bracket. Stand up out of the saddle and there’s a tiny bit of suspension bob that can easily be tamed courtesy of the CTD lever on the Fox rear shock. That said, we rarely found the need to use it, and were impressed with the controlled fashion and traction the Stumpjumper climbed with.

As the trail begins to flatten, the Stumpy EVO 29 really begins to come alive. The well-balanced suspension and more aggressive geometry help sit you in a great trail-attacking position, allowing you to react to terrain changes confidently and rapidly.

It’s this more neutral position that really bolsters confidence in tricky flat turns where grip is limited, allowing more intricate weight shifts in a bid to maximise traction.

Unlike the xx1 group, x01 uses a common 104mm bolt circle diameter. the stumpjumper fsr expert carbon evo 29 comes with a 32t x01 chainring:

Unlike the XX1 group, SRAM X01 uses a common 104mm bolt circle diameter

While we’re on the subject of flat turns, this was the bit we were most concerned about with regards to the height of the front end and the ability to weight the front wheel and maintain grip, especially considering the 29in wheel and lengthy, 140mm travel Pike fork. Although we dropped the stem down 10mm things never felt too lofty up front, even for our 5ft 8in (1.73m) test pilot.

When speeds pick up and the trails get rougher, the composure of the Stumpy EVO 29’s suspension, coupled with the big wheel rollover capabilities, lets you take riskier lines with an element of ease that leaves you thinking you should have gone even quicker.

There’s plenty of stability on faster, looser trails without things feeling cumbersome or the handling slow or sluggish. In fact, the Stumpjumper EVO 29 remains massively agile and playful, and can be picked up and planted on just about any line without hesitation. In tighter, slower sections we never had a problem flicking the from turn to turn or picking our way over stump-riddled paths.

We were massively impressed with the RockShox Pike fork, which smoothed the trail out effortlessly while providing stiff, accurate steering. The Pike, coupled with SRAM’s new X01 11-speed transmission, really sets the bike off, making for a fantastically capable machine that would be at home on lengthy all-day epics or more aggressive all-mountain hammering.

Frame and equipment: Similar geometry, new kit highlights

For 2014, nothing changes dramatically in terms of geometry for the Stumpjumper FSR EVO 29. Compared to the standard Stumpjumper FSR 29, the head angle remains one degree slacker and measures in at 68 degrees, while the wheelbase is stretched to 1,155mm compared to 1,147mm. The EVO also sits 3mm lower, sinking the bottom bracket to 335mm, which helps bolster cornering confidence.

The stealth 9M carbon front triangle gets new internal dropper post cable routing that, when paired with a Specialized Command Post IR (Internal Routing), makes for a clean, uninterrupted finish.

The rear M5 alloy triangle continues to use a 12x142mm axle to improve overall stiffness, and the FSR layout remains unchanged. A concentric link and shock shuttle is used to drive the Fox Float CTD Kashima-coated rear shock that controls the 135mm (5.3in) of rear wheel travel. Specialized say this configuration reduces weight and that, because the shock pivots on bearings rather than DU bushes, the suspension is more sensitive and durability is improved.

Other notable features include the PF30 bottom bracket, which is surrounded by ISCG 05 tabs, a tapered head tube and full cartridge bearing pivots.

The new rockshox pike fork is a solid performer and a good match for an aggressive trail bike such as the stumpjumper fsr expert carbon evo. the 29in evo shown here gets a 140mm travel pike, while the 26in version bumps the travel up to 150mm:

The RockShox Pike fork is a good match for an aggressive trail bike

Interestingly, Specialized have gone for a new take on how tools and water can be transported on the bike, integrating storage into the frame and component design. They’ve named the concept SWAT (Storage, Water, Air, Tools). The Stumpjumper gets stage two SWAT, meaning there’s a compact multi-tool under the bottle cage as well as a headset top cap with integrated chain tool.

It’s the componentry that really helps the latest Stumpjumper FSR EVO standout. Up front sits the impressive new 140mm (5.5in) travel Pike fork from RockShox. This, for many, has already helped re-establish RockShox as top contenders in the longer travel, single crown fork market.

Now internally routed, the Specialized Command Post IR has three fixed positions and uses a new single bolt head that Specialized claim offers a far more secure saddle fixture than before.

Helping to reduce weight without compromising on gearing is the new 11-speed SRAM X01 transmission. No guide is needed to keep the chain in place, and you get options to take you up or down the steepest climbs or fastest descents. Specialized have included a custom SRAM S-2200 crankset, though, rather than the alloy X01 offering.

Stopping is taken care of by powerful Avid Elixir 7 Trail brakes, while tyre grip is impressively dished out via the 2Bliss Ready 2.3in Butcher Control and Purgatory Control, both from the Specialized stable.

Starting with the Straggler, Surly's long overdue disc brake equipped cross brike. The first thing you'll probably notice is that it's got disc brakes. The rear dropouts have been totally redesigned with a couple things in mind — Disc brakes, rear derailleur, single speed, and ease of wheel removal. The straggler frame and fork is also ED coated to help to improve the life of your frame. The Straggler fork is using the Long Haul Trucker dropouts, mid blade & crown eyelets to accommodate a wide variety of fenders and racks. A complete build spec will be available on our website soonish.

The Surly Instigator: this is not your older brother/sisters Instigator. The frame has been totally redesigned, refined and ED coated. This bike wants to go big, hard and fast and it accomplishes this with a set of Surly 26 x 2.7" tires on Rabbit Hole rims and a squishy fork. The complete bike will be coming with a suspension fork as well.
When it comes to functionality, Trek knows both what you want and what you need. What you need is a bike that will take you back and forth from work, allow you to carry some groceries home from the market, and to help you stay in shape.

What you want is a mean-looking, trail-ready, durable machine with quality components and a nice paint job. Right?

That's exactly what you'll find in the 2014 Trek 3500 Disc. The frame is made of Trek's Alpha Silver aluminum, which is lightweight and features smooth-welds at the joints.

This little bit of suspension will help take you over some otherwise undesirable patches of road and trail without killing your hands.

The all-Shimano drivetrain is a plus, allowing you to easily use the Altus EZ-Fire 51 7-Speed shifters to send the chain through the Shimano Tourney Front and Rear (TX35) Derailleurs, on a Shimano M131 48/38/28 Crank and over the SRAM PG-730 12-32 cassette. If for some awful reason you have to slow down on your ride, you can do so using the HL 280 mechanical disc brakes (Shimano Altus levers).

The 3500 Disc is outfitted with Bontrager's standard (which is a pretty high standard!) Saddle, Handlebar, and grips — from it's SSR family of products.
The Ultimate Aerodynamic racing Helmet.

Typically, says Specialized, riders are forced to choose between well ventilated helmets and those that are aerodynamically efficient. Time trial helmets are fast but have limited application because of their size, weight, and lack of ventilation. Road helmets, on the other hand, are extremely lightweight and well ventilated but not terribly aerodynamic. Specialized has collected the brightest minds and used some of the most advanced research and development tools to help riders bridge the gap and stop compromising.

It's a simple rule: the more aerodynamic you are, the faster you can go. The S-Works Evade helmet helps you find those extra seconds that can help you win the race! Specialized wanted to incorporate the benefits of a TT helmet with the benefits of a traditional road helmet into a package that makes sense. Rather than adapt a TT helmet for the road, they decided to start from scratch to make something that is the best of both worlds. The Evade helmet is super lightweight; so it's comfortable, and is just as efficient at air cooling and ventilation as their road helmets.

Crockett is for racing. Developed with direct input from Katie Freakin Compton, the Crockett is all about earning your cowbells and handups all while crossing the line first. Already raced to an overall
World Cup Championship under KFC, the Crockett will be offered in aluminum only along side of the carbon Cronus CX which returns for 2014 in two models.

Available now, the Crockett might just show up on some cross courses near you this Fall.

Since the Crockett is race bred, there is still the disc or canti debate to contend with – though Crockett will be available in both so you can take your pick. The frames do appear to be one or the other
though, so you won’t be able to change your mind down the road.

Each frame is constructed from Trek’s 200 series Alpha Aluminum which is their premium alloy, heavily shaped into the smooth lines of the Crockett. The geometry was chosen based on Katie’s input for race specific handling.

The frame features a built in 3S chainkeeper to prevent derailments in the worst conditions, and post mount disc brakes on both front and rear for the non canti frame. The frame also includes improved internal cable routing to keep things operating smoother, longer in cross conditions.

At the front of the bike is Trek’s IsoSpeed full carbon fork borrowed from the Domane and tuned for CX, smoothing the ride while still remaining laterally stiff.

Complete bikes will be offered in the Crockett 9 Canti shown above, the Crockett 7 Canti and Disc, and the Crockett 5 Canti and Disc, as well as framesets for both Canti and Disc models.Randy Kirkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07187149342560881341noreply@blogger.com0The Spoke Shop45.776683 -108.5646469999999820.2546485 -149.87324099999998 71.2987175 -67.25605299999998tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-78074658853413789.post-50646246982640933202013-08-14T08:00:00.000-07:002013-08-14T08:00:01.239-07:002014 Specialized Epic Gets Tweaks to Boost Performance

2014 Specialized Epic: Fast, Firm, Aggressive 29er Geometry and Exceptional Components

The big change is a frame that's laterally stiffer and about .5 lbs lighter. The new carbon frame has lighter, more optimized materials yet thick chain stays to provide lateral stiffness. The seat post is now 27.2mm in diameter to save weight and make room for the brain shock cable that is fed in between the seat tube and the moving seat stays.

The cable routing is now internal. This is a big diversion for Specialized as they've stayed the course with their neatly organized external cable routing. Their old system tucked the cables under the down tube in a very organized manner and it worked well when set up properly. Specialized has designed a big port hole for the now internally routed cables and seals them off with big caps that guide the cable out of the frame. Inside, they house the cables in a foam 'noodle' material that prevents any kind of rattling noise inside the frame.

The latest Brain Shock still strives to lock out during pedaling and activate during trail bumps, but it is now smoother than ever during this transition.
In the case of the top shelf S-Works version, that means SRAM's XX1 group. The shifts are smooth and crisp, it is practically silent, and the unique 10-42T cassette provides more than enough range for the intended purpose.

Specialized pairs that awesome drivetrain with Magura MT8 hydraulic disc brakes, complete with their trick molded carbon composite brake lever bodies and calipers. The lightweight, 22mm-wide carbon fiber rims are quick to accelerate and reasonably stiff under hard cornering, lending a secure feel even when aggressively attacking smaller berms - helped further by the new 15-mm front thru-axle.

Specialized has used the Epic to roll out its new SWAT line of product, which will have benefits for both mountain and road cyclist. The acronym stands for "Storage, Water, Air, Tools," and refers to several on-bike storage options.

On the carbon frames, there's a sleeve that holds a specially shaped multi tool. On aluminum frames, the tool fits into a holder under the downtube-mounted bottle cage. There's also an 11-speed compatible chain tool, and storage for a spare link, which hides under the headset's pre-load cap.

SWAT also includes a removable flat repair pod that sits below the water bottle on the downtube. The small plastic box has enough room for a spare tube, tire lever, C02 inflator, and a cartridge. The whole thing bolts to a Specialized Zee water bottle cage and is secured by a third riv-nut on the down tube.

All new Epic models are compatible with the SWAT system, but only the highest end bikes come with the kit stock.

For 2014 Specialized has updated the bike's suspension by slightly reducing the leverage ratio, flattening the shock rate a bit, and revising the dampers shim stack. These changes make the locked-to-open transition smoother, the end of a stroke a bit more progressive, and the ride a bit more sensitive when open.

Beyond the suspension tune, Specialized made the shock's reservoir about 25 percent smaller to save weight. They have also revised the hose (it is more durable) and reduced the number of settings in the BRAIN threshold adjuster to five, to make it easier to balance the front to rear feel of the suspension.

There is so much more to be said about the 2014 Specialized Epic, and many more reviews to come. Why don't you come by The Spoke Shop and check out the great Specialized 2014 model year bikes!

There are two versions of the saddle: the carbon-railed RXL, which has a claimed weight of 185g, and the RL, which has titanium rails and a marginally heavier claimed weight (TBC).

They’re also now using their own proprietary fabric called Profila. They say it does everything you’d expect a premium fabric to do – it’s lightweight, breathable and fast-wicking – but by using their own fabric Bontrager say they’re able to tweak its properties according to the type of garment.
Bontrager RXXXL jersey

So, for the 2014 spring/summer range, there’s Profila Cool, for maximum breathability, Profila UV, for block out UV rays, Profila Power, a compressive fabric designed to offer support and Profila Dry, designed to wick moisture rapidly and dry quickly.
The RXXXL jersey, for example, uses Profila Dry, while the corresponding bib shorts are made from Profila Power. The RXL Summer jersey, meanwhile, is designed for the hottest of days and is therefore made from Profila Cool with Profila Dry inserts.

The Ion 700 USB is Bontrager’s first ‘see by’ light. As the name suggest, it has a claimed output of 700 Lumens, which is venturing into serious light territory and should be plenty in principle for serious commuting and some training on unlit roads.

The light, which is USB rechargeable, has five modes (three solid and two flashing) and can be rotated 360 degrees on the quick-release mount. It’s a compact unit, which also has side illumination by way or two small, yellow windows.

Finally, this Travel Charger pump is also new from Bontrager. It’s a travel version of the existing Charger track pump, designed as a high-volume pump for when space is at a premium, so to chuck in the back of your car ahead of a sportive, or in a bike bag if taking your bike abroad.

It folds down into a neat package which is far less obtrusive than a traditional track pump and has a folding foot platform to help get your tyres pumped up in double-quick time.

The Velocis supersedes the Oracle (which itself remains in the range) as Bontrager’s flagship road lid and they say it’s their “fastest, lightest and most innovative helmet ever”.

The key change is the use of a composite inner skeleton which Bontrager say allows them to use larger vents without compromising the structural integrity of the helmet. It also helps keep the helmet’s weight down at a claimed 228g.

The Velocis uses Bontrager’s existing Headmaster II fit system, which uses an adjustment dial at the rear of the helmet, and a cradle which can be set to three different height, in order to fine-tune the fit.

Inside the helmet, the FormFit brow band is designed to form to the shape of the forehead. It also runs the length of the entire brow to help stop sweat running down to your eyes. One particularly interesting feature is the optional NeoVisor; a removable visor which slots in front of the brow band and attaches with a handful of small velcro patches. As a result, it’s said to have no impact on fit and will keep the sun or rain out of your eyes, much like a traditional cotton cap.

The Velocis is available in four colors, including the matte black/charcoal option photographed at Trek World.
One of the ways they want to achieve that is through the sponsorship of professional riders who may not necessarily be associated with either Trek (as they ride for a team with a different bike sponsor).

One of those riders is Kanstantsin Siutsou, who uses the Bontrager RXL shoe in this limited edition Team Sky colorway. Now it’s available to the public, too, but only in limited sizes (41-45) and limited numbers.

The RXL is, of course, available in a range of regular colors. The sole has a rating of 12 (the highest possible) on Bontrager’s stiffness index and claimed weight is 276g per shoe.

Both the RXL and the RL (which is available in the new-for-2014 high-viz yellow pictured above) have a new low-profile buckle, originally designed for Bontrager’s mountain bike shoes in order to prevent the buckle hitting rocks and roots.

2014 Trek 7.6 FX. Great Specs, Great Look, Great Price!

Some may call it a fitness bike, but it can be used for so many different things! It's fast, fun, agile, and appeals to roadies, commuters, fitness fans, errand runners, Sunday riders, and more!

Trek's Top end FX models grab popular road bike technology like an E2 tapered head tube and fork and simple, light 2x10 gearing for a fast sporty ride. The E2 head tube tapers from a 1.5" lower to a 1-1/8" upper, placing more material where it matters for the full stiffness of a 1.5" without the added weight. Another weight saving feature is the lightweight front fork with carbon fiber legs to soak up hand-numbing road vibration.

More vibration control is handled by IsoZone technology and super comfortable Bontrager bars and grips encourage you to ride as long as you'd like! Trek has combined their speedy, yet stable FX geometry with tube shapes inspired by Trek's road heritage for a lightweight ride that's fast and fun.

They introduced these disc equipped Roubaix models last year, and the frame has now been designed around the disc brakes. The rear caliper is mounted inside the dropout and the hose, along with the gear cables, is routed inside the frame. The new fork has the hose mounted externally, and the rotors are mounted to the DT Axis 4.0 wheelset.

BB30 continues to be Specialized preferred bottom bracket standard, so FSA chainsets abound across the 2014 range. In this case, the Expert Disc comes with a carbon armed FSA SL-K light chainset.

The Roubaix Sport is offered with a double or triple chainset, both FSA Gossamer, and both with Shimano 105 dual control levers and mechs and Specialized Axis 2.0 wheels.

At the Comp level, you will find the spec similar to the Elite, but with Ultegra dual control levers and mechs. The reintroduced Pro represents a more significant leap, with Dura Ace shifting, a FACT carbon chainset, and Roval Fusee aluminum clinchers.

Next is the 2014 CruX
Specifically the Sport E5 disc — is built around an aluminum frame and carbon fork will be slowed this year by SRAM S-Series hydraulic brakes. The mechs are SRAm Apex, the chainset SRAM S-Series, and the wehels, Specialized's own CHECK Axis 2.0 Disc.

The Sport Carbon (pictured) comes with a FACT carbon chassis with cantilever brakes. Shimano 105 STI levers and mechs take care of the shifting. An FSA Gossamer chainset with cyclocross specific 46 and 36 tooth rings, and proprietary Axis 2.0 wheels.

The low end model - Crux E5 is built around the same aluminum chassis, but is fitted with Shimano Sora mechs and shifters and Tektro cantilever brakes.

The project manager for the 2014 Specialized Epic was nice enough to show us some of the features and explain what makes the new bike so great.

The goal, he said, was to take what they knew already worked, and then tweak some small details to make the bike perform at an elevated level.

The stiffness of the rear end was bolstered by a pivot joining the shock, the link and the stay all in one pivot - and this also helps the weight in this area. They have also used ShockBlock technology, allowing the bike to be more supple on small bumps by dissolving road shock into a cartridge bearing.

Subscribe to our channel or visit our blog to stay up on all the 2014 Specialized Bikes and more!
http://bestbikeshopinbillings.blogspot.com

DURANGO, Colorado (VN) — The venerable Specialized Epic full-suspension XC bike is getting a facelift for 2014. A complete frame redesign is on tap for the bike, which will only be available as a 29er, and for the first time ever, Specialized will offer two distinct frame lines under the Epic headline.

The Epic was the first full-suspension bike to win a world championship under Burry Stander. Last season, Yaroslav Kuhlavy piloted the Epic 29er to World Cup wins as well as Olympic gold, again, two firsts for a full-suspension 29er.

Two models, one name

The Epic has long been a single-frame design with a variety of builds and frame materials being offered. For 2014, Specialized will offer two frame designs: the classic 100mm travel Epic and the new 95mm, single-front-ring drivetrain specific, World Cup (WC).

In essence, riders will now have a choice: the standard Epic, similar in design intention to the one currently on the market, or a stripped-out, race-day version.

The bottom bracket of the 95-mm World Cup bikes is 2mm higher, the chainstays are 9mm shorter, and the headtube is a half a degree steeper when compared to the standard Epic, which carries over a nearly identical geometry from the 2013 Epic.

The World Cup offers an extremely aggressive platform. The chainstays are nearly a centimeter shorter, making the bike feel compact and whippy. The seat stays are the same length as the standard Epic, as the 5mm reduction in travel allowed frame designers to recycle those.

The steeper headtube of the WC paired with 5mm reduction in travel of the Rock Shox Sid World Cup makes the front end feel much more aggressive. Specialized claims that both models of the Epic are stiffer than the current model. The increased front-end stiffness could be easily attributed to the new wheels or the 15mm thru-axle that Specialized has finally come around to stocking on its cross-country bikes.

Build specs

As always with the Epic, every model comes equipped with a Fox shock and Brain inertia valve, which firms up the suspension when it is not needed — on smooth trails, or when climbing, for example. The Brain is relatively unchanged, though it is supposed to have a smoother opening action from the firm setting. Additionally, there are now only five positions, making it easier for riders to tune it to match the RockShox Sid fork with Mini Brain that is spec’d on every model, save the entry level Comp.

The S-Works carbon framed models (both the 95mm and 100mm versions) come equipped with Kashima coated Fox shocks, RockShox Sid World Cups, and Roval SL 29 wheels, making for extremely lightweight, and expensive builds. However, the best balance between build specs and price will be the Marathon, which comes with slightly heavier Roval carbon wheels, SRAM XO, and Magura MT6 stoppers. The Marathon build is only available in the 100mm-travel frame version.

The World Cup will be available in two builds, an S-Works equipped with SRAM XX1, a custom 95mm RockShox Sid World Cup. The Epic Expert WC will be offered with XO1, a RockShox Sid, and Roval carbon 29er wheels. The S-Works WC will also be available in a frameset.

The standard, 100mm version of the frame will be available in S-Works, Expert, Marathon, and Comp builds, spanning a price range of $10,500 to $3,300. The S-Works will use the same 11m carbon as the World Cup model of the same name, while the Marathon and Comp will use lower-grade carbon and the Comp has an aluminum rear triangle.

The full-suspension: re-imagined

Until now, carrying two bottles on most full-suspension bikes has been impossible, at least without getting bottles caked in dirt under the down tube or on the back of the seatpost. Riders had to retrofit their bikes in order to carry enough water and tools for an all day adventure; that is, without carrying a pack or stuffing jersey pockets.

The engineering team at Specialized, headed up by Eric Schuda, sought to make the rider’s life easier. The result is what the company is calling SWAT (Storage, Water, Air, and Tools). The SWAT system took three years to engineer, a full year longer than the new Epic took.

The SWAT system, which mounts at the bottle cage using an extra mount bolt on the frame, allows for the use of two water bottles and hides away a multi tool, CO2 canister, and has storage space for a tube. It’s all tucked neatly into the frame.

The first step was to fit two bottle cages inside the front triangle of the Epic, a goal achieved by tucking the custom Fox shock into the top tube and moving the new concentric pivot — like that of the Specialized Camber from last year — higher up the seat tube.

The new shock placement also acts as a storage point for the SWAT multitool. The multi tool has bits for everything a rider should want, including a specially machined 8mm driver for pedals that still fits in the tool without being too bulky. The multitool pulls double-duty as the driver piece for the chain tool, which is integrated into the top cap, along with a spare masterlink.

The World Cup frame will not come standard with the SWAT kit, but the standard 100mm S-Works, Marathon, and Expert carbon models all come equipped with the system.

The SWAT kit can only be used on SWAT Level 3 prepped frames, or frames which have an extra bottle cage bolt on the downtube. As of now, only the Epic, Epic WC, and Stumpjumper are Level 3 bikes.

That mix of experience has given Hoots a unique perspective on what it
takes to take your riding to the next level. Whether you’re a beginner
or veteran mountain biking, these four steps will make faster, smoother
and more confident in any situation.
advises his students to learn to move both the bike and your body
around for more traction and control. A pump track is a great place to
work on this skill, but you can also use something closer to home: a
curb. “Riding up, you want to go from the point of getting the front
wheel on and then riding your rear wheel up to getting up and over using
pressure control,” Hoots says. “The object is to get up on the curb
touching each tire, but not hitting the curb as a square edge.” To
practice this, think about more than just hopping up with your feet—it’s
weighting and unweighting first the front and then the rear of the bike
to get it up and on the curb. “Once you’re up, practice pumping down
the same way,” Hoots says. “You want to make it a smooth edge, not a
square edge.”
Pushing into corners
To
turn, most beginners—and even some intermediate riders—just turn their
handlebar to corner. Advanced cornering is more active—it’s about
pressing the bike into a corner. “You want to look ahead and commit,”
Hoots says, “and then, with your pedals level, press through the apex of
the corner with your arms and legs. This happens when you start to
trust your tires and trust the bike.” The other key component: Speed,
since leaning the bike over is a must. You can practice this on any
corner.

lot of people will tell you that you need to get your ass back when
you’re braking, but you never know how far,” Hoots says. “There are a
lot of things at play, but if you keep your cranks level but drop your
heels, that will usually put you in the right position. It amplifies how
much pressure you’re getting from the rear wheel to the ground.” Hoots
recommends adding this braking practice to your curb sessions. “Every
time you bump off a curb, you’re figuring out where your body is and how
to move front and back,” he explains. “I’ve lost track of how much time
I’ve spent bumping into curbs.”
of planning is looking ahead, which also gets your shoulders and upper
body in the right place. But the bigger part is mentally walking through
what you’re doing before you do it. “When consistency counts, you need
to plan,” Hoots says. “Think about Ryan Leech hopping up and riding on a
chain between two posts. He doesn’t jump up there and go, ‘Oh my god
I’m riding this! It’s wicked!’ He’s thought through that move as well as
what he’s doing after it, and after that, too,” Hoots says. To plan
ahead, you need to break down the moves. Think through the steps of
getting up and down a curb. Or map out the points you want to hit in a
corner. Then plan through all the corners of your local big switchback
climb. “Once you have the sequence down, then you can replicate it,”
Hoots says. “Because doing something once is great, but being able to do
it the same way twice is really a trick.”

The Stache 7 begins with Trek's Alpha Platinum Aluminum Frame with their signature tapered E2 head tube and steeply sloped top tube for extra clearance for your groin despite the 29" wheels. All the gear cabling is internal, and using amazing techniques in hydroforming, Trek made the frame asymmetrical (flared and offset) with a concave backed seat tube for wheel and direct mount front merch clearance. The G2 geometry also gives a distinctively light feel to the steering, so even with a 90mm stem you will have little trouble turning the front wheel sharply.

There's more than enough stiffness in the frame to allow the rider to put every ounce of their power into forward movement. You'll get a lot of torque and traction on climbs and marshy ground too.

The RockShox Recon Silver front fork is a bit heavier than most front suspension forks, but it's definitely worth the weight. With 20mm more travel than most 29er hardtails, it will boost your confidence on those big drops and help you maintain control over rocks and logs. While most trail 29ers stick with a 100mm travel fork to avoid jacking the front end too high, Trek increased control with 120mm stroke fork. Gary Fisher custom G2 geometry is shown in a 15mm axle and the tapered steerer.

"While it can feel nervous and fluttery at first, the long wheelbase means it's still an impressively stable bike once you learn to trust it, and the low bottom bracket means you can really rip through corners with wheels scrabbling as you search for the exit point" (BikeRadar.com)
"It will debut as an Ultegra-level component in the form of the new Ultegra grade R785 Di2/hydraulic disc brake" reports Molly of CXmagazine.com

Shimano says, "Two of Shimano's marquee component technologies have combined to set the new standard in high performance road and cyclocross hydraulic disc brake and shifting systems." Their new R785 series Di2/hydraulic disc brake system will, "provide powerful, dependable performance that is tuneable for a variety of cycling uses and conditions.

The new system will utilize Shimano Di2 electronic shifting, and ICE Technologies hydraulic disc heat management system radiate out heat by up to 200 degrees via an integration of aluminum materials in disc brake rotors and pads. This ensures consistent, dependable braking performance regardless of conditions.

Shimano says that mud will be no problem because the, "braking power is consistent no matter what the conditions or the descent. For cyclocross, racers can brake later in the corners, with more power and better modulation in all conditions.

Molly from Cxmagazine.com also provided a nice list of the weights for this R785 Hydraulic Brake system:

1. ST-R785 STI Shifters / Brake Levers: 515 grams

2. BR-R785 Hydraulic Disc BRakes: 263 grams

3. Brake Hose (BH59) 61.5 grams

The new frameset has dropped in weight by 25 grams compared to the 2012 Madone 7-Series. Trek says they accomplished this by reworking the composites and layup used for construction, and that the new rear chainstay design has improved both ride quality and stopping performance from the direct-mount integrated brake units.
The bike reviewing site bikeradar.com has used Trek's Project One website to create designs similar to that of Fabian Cancellara... the "Spartacus" Frame: custom paint, carbon Bontrager wheels, Dura-Ace and a full smattering of Bontrager lightweight carbon parts.

Roadbikeaction.com had this to say about bulding bikes using Trek's Project One, "[The] experience can be as quick as five minutes. But with options ranging from the thousands of paint job configurations, component choices from Campagnolo, Shimano, and Sram, SRM and Quarq power meter add-ons, Bontrager wheel depth and material choices, in addition to your taste in cable housing, handlebar tape, and shifter hoods, Project One can be a lengthy, but fun, endeavor.

Probikeswap.com on the other hand, has released pictures of what the Radioshack Leapord Trek riders will be riding.
So what's new on the 2014 Madone 7 series?

We've already mentioned a weight drop of 25g. The chain stays also have been stiffened near the brake for much better braking performance, and the geometry has been tweaked a bit to improve the ride feel. They did this by adding a bit of vertical flex near the end of the stays to improve comfort but still keeping great braking performance.
float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;">Handlebar-Shoulder Ratio:
Drop handlebars come in sizes ranging from about 38-cm to 44-cm wide and you select by matching the width of your shoulders. So, if the distance between your shoulder blades is 42-cm, that's what the handlebar width should be, measured from the center of the other end. Some manufacturer's measure from outside-to-outside, so check with us if you're not sure.

Improve Breathing and Control
The right bar width will provide comfort and increased efficiency because you'll be able to breathe better. It's especially noticeable if you've been using too-narrow a drop handlebar and you climb frequently. You'll appreciate additional leverage too, whenever you stand.

Adjusting Flat Bars
For flat handlebars, width has more to do with riding preferences. The cool thing is, we can cut down handlebars that are too wide, meaning you won't have to replace yours if they don't feel right.

Try Bar Ends
Remember that you can change the feel of a flat handlebar and give yourself some room to stretch out by installing bar ends. These are also excellent for climbing because they give you a great pulling position and move your body weight forward (when you're gripping the bar ends), which helps keep the front end down on the steep stuff.

Try Higher Bars
Riser bars are also available, which are models that slope upwards on the ends to provide less bend in your back when you lean forward to grab the grips. Many off-roaders find that risers are just the ticket for a more comfortable position. THey're also typically a bit wider than flat bars to provide additional leverage, which is helpful on technical terrain.

Try "High-Rise" Handlebars
There are also handlebars designed for more leisurely riding, which you'll find on cruisers and city bikes. These are sometimes called "sweep," "high rise," "comfort" or "cruiser" bars, and they'll raise your riding position the most.

Usually, riders who enjoy demanding, technical trails appreciate a little additional width (24 to 27 inches), especially if they're using dual-suspension frames. All-round riders prefer a more standard width of about 22 inches.

Learning to use the equipment that comes with your bike is extremely important, as it will help you to enjoy your ride more as well as extend the life of those parts. Shifting is no exception, and we have a few tips to help you improve that aspect of your riding.

An important rule to remember is to - reduce your applied pressure on the pedals during shifts. As drivetrains have improved over the years, the have been designed to shift no matter how much pressure is put on the pedals. However, if you ease up on the pressure just a bit, the shifts will be smoother and your chain, cogs and chainrings will last longer.

Here are some more tips to help keep your drivetrain in great working order:

Keeping Your Drivetrain Clean:

Before we even get into proper shifting, it is important to make sure you keep your drivetrain clean and tuned up to extend the life of your drivetrain. We have chain cleaners for sale in the shop that can help get your chain clean and keep it that way.

Every six months or so, inspect your chain and measure to see if it has been stretching.

Pick a chain pin on the top side and measure to any pin 12 inches away. Links are exactly one-inch long, so you should be able to measure exactly 12 inches between two pins. If the measurement is 12 1/8 inch or longer, it's time to replace the chain.

RELATED POST: See our post all about how chains are made here!

(Check Your Cogs too!)

Remember: cogs wear out at about the same rate as the chain. If you put on a new chain, you will eventually run into skipping cogs - which is at best annoying and at worst dangerous!

Remember to keep the front rings and rear cogs clean. Stay on the lookout for a post about how to clean your chain and drivetrain!

On The Road Tips:

Shift Before Hills:

Even though the hardest place to put less pressure on your pedals is when you are struggling to get up a steep hill. Try changing gears before the steep part of the hill so you can make the shift with out stressing the chain and pedals.

Front Shifts:

Remember when you are shifting the front derailleur that the chainrings are significantly different in size! This means your derailleur has to work hard to move the chain from one to the other. If you can add some finesse to this shift, you are much more likely to get a clean, smooth shift. And, you'll eliminate problems associated with high pressure shifts such as having the chain come off.

There are three or four set spots (shift ramps/shift gates) on the chainrings to make it shift. The chain (while moving forward) needs to contact these ramps to be pulled up onto or down over the chainring. It is very important to hold the shift until the chain comes into contact with a shift ramp. When the chain is under load (meaning there is force on the pedals) this is the ony spot where the chain will shift. Ideally shifting should be done with little load on the chain. When the chain is under load the derailleur will just flex and laugh at you instead of making the shift happen. When there is no load on the chain the derailleur will be able to move it.

Getting Your Chain BACK On:

Usually, you can shift the chain right back on the chainring if it falls off. This is usually impossible when climbing a hill, as you will lose momentum and have to stop. However, any time you are riding and you can coast for a few seconds, you can almost always get the chain back on by gently pedaling and shifting the front derailleur to move the chain toward the ring.

(When a chain comes off repeatedly, something is wrong and you should have us take a look at the front derailleur adjustment.)

"The Rockhopper has excellent agility. It is the bike that most fun hopping logs and finding jumps to play on. It's ability to carve single track makes it really fun to ride. If your emphasis is on speed and efficiency, other bikes are probably better suited. However, the RockHopper can be built light enough to race.(...) As a first mountain bike, you really can't do better. It's confident and forgiving, but never sluggish. It's easy to maneuver, and is equally easy to handle at slow speed and high speed. This is an excellent all arounder."

2013 Brings A Bunch of Revamped Aero Wheelsets to The Shimano Lineup

(images and content courtesy of bikerumor)

All
the wheels are 11-speed ready to go with the new components. The non
drive side has been pushed out to 7mm to maintain proper triangulation,
and the freehub body is 1.85mm wider. The new rims are called D2 and are
23mm or 24mm wide depending on the model. Shimano also gave them a
deeper tire bed to allow the tire to fit snugly to the sidewall, not
allowing a gap on the clinchers. These combined features balance frontal
and side aerodynamics.

Shimano has gone out of their
way to make the rims perform better and more comfortable. They have
given a new profile to the deeper wheels to help offset the effects of
crosswinds, and receive a new lacing and hub design to improve response
and speed.
The clincher rim weight comes in around 383g while the tubeless one is
about 420g.

Here are some Features:

The
9000-series Dura-Ace hubs, like all of the complete wheels, continue to
use Shimano's cup-and-cone angular contact bearing system. It's
reliable, easy to service and Shimano says it's strong and rolls smooth.
The big changes are the move to 11-speed and a full titanium freehub
assembly like on the wheels. Tyler Benedict of Bikerumor.com caught a super sneak peek at the new Trek Superfly 29er at the Trans-Sylvania Epic which is America's Longest Mountain Bike Stage Race Experience in Central Pennsylvania.

Benedict talks about a few of the frame changes from the current Superfly AL model; saying that the most important change is the, "thru-axle rear end and more heavily shaped hydroformed tubes. It also gets revised cable routing with internal runs for shifting. Graphics and naming scheme are also different"
AND, Recon's patented gaze detection only turns on when you glance at the screen.

According to Hamid Abdollahi who is the CTO of Recon Instruments, "We are excited to be showing Recon Jet at Google I/O. Since we started the company in 2008, we have developed HUDs with a purpose; to relay instant, activity specific, user defined information effortlessly to the user's eye. This philosophy is inherent in Jet which marries a powerful open platform, a widescreen display and high-performance polarized optics to offer what we believe is a great value proposition."

The Jet takes all this plus a dual-core processor, speaker, and microphone in a small unit mounted to sporty sunglasses. Recon says the microcomputer module is faster and more powerful than the current unit in the snow sport goggles.

Recon says that the glasses are specifically designed for running, cycling, and golf. But really, these glasses could be used for any number of applications as seen in Recon's video. A surgeon can look at his patients information during surgery or a forestry worker could receive data about a forest fire.
